Of the whale species seen in the Cape waters, southern right whales are the most common.
However, humpback whales and Bryde’s whales are spotted often. These days, their number has grown, and they’re fairly common to spot off the coast of Cape Town. Distinguishable by their callosities (rough patches of skin covered in barnacles) on their heads & long arching mouths as well as a double blowhole. Reaching an average length of 15m & weigh up to 60 tons! The whales migrate annually from Antarctica to the coast around Cape Town to calve their offspring. They usually arrive in June and stay until November.
